The Highland Loop
Thinking about playing the Old Tom Morris Trail? But maybe playing all 18 courses is a little too much for one trip? To help get you started, we’ve split the Trail into smaller chunks and in the first of a multi-part blog, we present to you The Old Tom Morris Trail’s Highland Loop.
Number 2 on the Trail: Royal Dornoch
The second course on the Trail, Royal Dornoch is a truly phenomenal links course. In view of it’s award as Scotland’s Best Golf Course in 2020, it is easy to see why Royal Dornoch would receive such an accolade. The curving bay of Dornoch Firth and the impressive white sandy beaches, coupled with the softly contoured dunes make for a magnificent setting.
Number 3 on the Trail: Tain
Situated 10 miles south of Royal Dornoch on the Easter Ross peninsula, the third course on the Trail is Tain. With scenic views over the Dornoch Firth, this is certainly a hidden gem not to be overlooked. Tain offers a sense of variety and challenge for all golfers who visit, with stunning sea views on one side and breath taking mountains on the other. Altogether, the combination of links and heathland make Tain a unique experience for golfers.
Number 4 on the Trail: Nairn
Along the southern shores of the Moray Firth, lies the fourth course on the Trail, Nairn. Golfers who play Nairn are rewarded with stunning views of the Moray Firth, Black Isle and Cawdor Hills. Additionally, demanding greens and angular short holes combine to challenge any golfer. Culminating with a brilliant par-5 eighteenth hole, golfers are able to take in the glorious surroundings right up until they enter the clubhouse to reflect on their round.
Number 5 on the Trail: Moray Old
Heading further east along the Moray Firth coastline, lies the fifth course on the Trail, Moray Old. Known as one of Scotland’s finest links courses, Old Tom himself frequently played this course in the early days after he designed it. The course features deep revetted bunkers, rolling fairways and smooth, fast greens designed to create an exhilarating round for any golfer.
Number 6 on the Trail: Cullen
Sixth on the Trail, situated on the Moray Coast, is Cullen. With breath taking views stretching across the Moray Firth, Cullen has a unique and authentic feel to it. Iconic with Cullen Links are the Cullen Quartzite Formations. Golfers play toward, over and around these gargantuan sea stacks, an experience unlike any other on the Trail.
